Advocate Pansy Tlakula is the Chairperson of the Information Regulator of South Africa. She studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand before completing her masters in law at Harvard. She has held a number of influential positions.
Advocate Tlakula was appointed in 2005 as member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). She served the ACHRC for 12 years, until November 2017. She held the mandates of Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information, Chairperson of the Working Group on Specific Issues related to the work of the African Commission, and, between 2015 and 2017, she served as Chairperson of the ACHRC. In January 2020 she started her four-year tenure as a member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Ms Nonkqubela Thathakahle Jordan-Dyani currently serves as the Director-General in the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies. She was formerly the Deputy-Director-General: International Relations and Trade who was also the Acting Director-General (DG) in the department for two years before she was appointed permanently in August 2023.
Nonkqubela is a seasoned civil servant with more than 20 years of experience in the public sector, including over a decade in senior management capacities.
She holds a BA from the University of Fort Hare, and BA (Hon) in international relations (politics and international law) from the same institution. Dr. Happy Sithole is the Centre Manager for the South African cyberinfrastructure (CI) system, NICIS since 2019. He is responsible for the coordination of this system so that it meets the demands of the South African National System of Innovation, in support of the Department of Science and Innovation. This involves the three main entities of the CI, Centre for High-Performance Computing (CHPC), South African National Research Network (SANReN), Data Intensive Initiative of South Africa (DIRISA).
Prior to becoming the CI centre manager, Sithole spent 12 years as the director of the Centre for High Performance Computing. He completed his PhD in materials science, focusing on electronic and atomistic simulation of iron sulphides, at the University of Limpopo, where he also lectured for nine years. He has applied high-performance computing to solve problems in mining industries and nuclear power plant designs, such as at his time at the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor. Sithole also sits on the steering committees of high-performance computing meetings in Germany, Russia and Singapore. He was the Chairperson of the ICT Committee of the National Library Board and is currently a board member at the Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Safety and Security (CNSS) in South Africa.
Center Manager: National Integrated Cyber Infrastructure System
Dr. Mary-Jane Bopape is the Managing Director of the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF). SAEON’s focus is on the implementation of infrastructure for long-term environmental monitoring through seven nodes located in different parts of the country as well as three Research Infrastructures of the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR) (i.e. EFTEON, SMCRI and SAPRI). She holds a PhD in meteorology from the University of Pretoria and did her postdoc at the University of Reading, UK.
Prior to joining the NRF, she was senior manager of the Research Department and before then, Chief Scientist at the South African Weather Service where she oversaw research in weather and climate with the use of weather radars, the lightning detection network, satellite data, and numerical weather and climate models. She was also a senior researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Natural Resource and Environment (NRE) unit where she focused on climate change projections and numerical simulations with a nonhydrostratic model.
She worked at the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) where she supported earth scientists using the High Performance Computing (HPC) for their research and studies. She has led a weather and climate project to implement the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Cyber-Infrastructure Framework. She co-supervises postgraduate students at the Universities of Limpopo, Cape Town, Witwatersrand, Pretoria and North West.
She is one of twenty one 2019 Climate Research for Development (CR4D) fellowship grantees and a 2021 AIMS Women Fellow in Climate Change Science. She was recognised by the President of South Africa as a pathfinder in his 9 August 2019 speech on women’s day for leading a paper describing a programme for the local development of weather and climate models.
She is a co-recipient of the 2008 World Meteorological Organization (WMO) award for young researchers. She served as the honorary secretary and as co-President of the South African Society for Atmospheric Sciences (SASAS) in different terms. She was listed as one of the most influential Africans of 2021 by the New African magazine for weather forecasting research, and as a scientist change maker by the Ghana based Humanitarian Awards Global. About Dr. Sandile Mbatha (PhD)
Dr. Mbatha holds a PhD in Architecture and Town Planning from the University of Stuttgart, focusing on informal transactions in low-income housing in South Africa. He has over a decade of experience working with the public and non-governmental sectors, developing and implementing programs for low-income urban and peri-urban communities. He has held numerous fellowships, including the 2017/18 Academy for African Urban Diversity cohort, the 2019 International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP), and the MGG Digital Academy Fellow 2021.
Dr. Mbatha’s work on the Strat Hub has earned local and international recognition, including awards as a Government Digital Leader in the GovTech 2022 awards, a PSI Trailblazer in 2023, and the 2023 Leadership Award. As a “recovering academic,” he has previously been a visiting PhD Scholar at University College London, worked as a lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and served as an external examiner for postgraduate projects at various universities locally and abroad.
